What Flying Kites (and 2,500 Live Conversations) Taught Me About Leadership

ree

When I was in school — before 10th grade, in my small, beautiful town — I loved flying kites. Even when sometimes I ran downstairs for water or a quick bite, my eyes never left the thread.

That thin line, strengthened with manjha, kept me connected. I could give the kite space to dance with the wind, but I never lost sight of it.

Kite flying did something else too. It connected me with the best flyers in town — people older, sharper, more experienced. In the air, we were competitors. On the ground, we were friends. A mastermind before I even knew the word.

They called my style "fearless." I didn't realize then that fearlessness wasn't about control — it was about trust. Trust in the thread. Trust in the wind. Trust in being present.

I didn't know I was learning leadership — but I was, with every kite that rose and every one that fell.

Years later, after hosting more than 2,500 live conversations with entrepreneurs, authors, and leaders, I see the same pattern everywhere.

The people who build lasting things don't try to control every movement. They stay present. They give freedom, but never lose connection.

That's leadership — not micromanagement or detachment, but attention. It's knowing when to hold, when to ease off, and when to let the wind do its work.

In every episode I host, I see that invisible thread — between purpose and action, ideas and execution, freedom and responsibility. It's what keeps everything flying.

And after so many conversations, I've learned something else — I can feel when the thread goes missing. In my guests. In the conversation. Sometimes even in myself. The energy shifts. The focus drifts. That's when it's time to pause, reconnect, and guide again.

Even when I moved from that small town to bigger cities, I stayed connected to what mattered — not by clinging, but by watching. By caring.

What This Means for You

Ask yourself:

Where are you gripping too tight?

Where have you let go entirely?

Leadership isn't about controlling the wind — it's about keeping your eyes on the thread.
